I saw this design throughout the Gulf Coast region; it’s to withstand the storm surge. Maybe rising sea-levels.

Those aren’t concrete barriers. This condo project was built on the rubble of the ancient city of Tavona (note the remarkably clear original label “Tavona” on the rubble), which mostly sank into Lake Union eons ago. We on the design review board felt very strongly that celebrating the rubble was an organic statement of something. We’ll get back to you when we’ve decided just what.

Tavona is an Italian word meaning both “transfer station” and “dead end”.

Good thing those mega secure concrete barriers are there to prevent drivers being overcome with design rage. Or maybe they are leasing the ground floor to TSA and there’s a metal detector too.
